Quick Stats

2009.03.10

I was reading a page on InSide (our horrible pre-configured IE homepage… or I’d never have seen it) and found this interesting. These numbers show how long it has taken Nationwide to bind 1000 auto policies via our online quote and bind process over the past three years or so.

Jan. 2006: 17.5 months to bind 1,000 policies

Jan. 2007: 8.5 months to bind 1,000 policies

Jan. 2008: 3 months to bind 1,000 policies

Jan. 2009: 19 days to bind 1,000 policies

Kind of crazy. What used to take us the better part of two years now takes us just 19 days. That’s a lot of policies.

Amusement

2009.03.09

The other day I was minding my own business when… I get a text message! Hooray! The number wasn’t in my phone, but the person talked like they were sure they had the right number - so I thought I was just an ass for not knowing who they were. Read on and be amused:

Feb 26, 2009 7:17PM
Girl: I got my hair cut. It is so short

Me: Why so short?

Girl: Well, I got 4 inches cut off. The style looks cute though. I cried a lot today. Ahhhhhh.

Me: What? Why? Hehe I want to see. That seems like a lot of hair!

Girl: Over stress and an argument that I had last night. I will be out tomorrow night shopping. R U working tomorrow? Am I on the schedule if u are at work.

Me: I’m off tomorrow. Working until 3am tonight. But I have to pick up my keys to the new place in the morning. Any idea what time?
Me: Hahaha who is this? The number looks familiar but I don’t know whose number it is - it’s not in my phone.

Girl: Um idk. Do u want to meet us and go shopping with me for my trip
Girl: Gosh and i have been texting u for how long now. hahahaha

Me: Haha. I know. Crazy. :)

Girl: If we do go shopping tomorrow do u want to come

Me: I’m moving, but I might take a break depending on when you go and where.

Girl: U r still working at mcdonalds right?

Me: Hahahahaha. Oh boy. This is def a wrong number or something. I’ve never worked at McDonald’s.
Me: I work for an insurance company ;)

Girl: Wait then who is this

Me: Jimmie. LOL. That’s why I asked about the number.

Girl: OMG I am so incredibly sorry

Me: LOL. It was fun anyway - no worries hahaha

Girl: Ok just delete all the messages and get rid of my number

Me: No problem. Hope your haircut goes over well :) have fun shopping

Girl: I feel so bad

Me: Nah no worries. It’s hilarious!

Girl: Yeah that’s true.

Yeaaaaah…. McDonald’s! Hahahahaha!

Astrology Fun

2009.02.05

So, a lot has been going on recently and I’ve been very interested in seeing how it all ties into astrology - whether or not it matches up. I’ve never been one to believe in such things, but I have seen some strong correlations between what is predicted and what happens. It’s almost scary. But - to think that a few sentences can apply to so many people - it’s just crazy. Anyway, take it however you like. This week’s pisces horoscope is below, from http://www.astrologysource.com/weekly.html

PISCES
This week’s scenario is highlighted by a sense of floating free from the earthly bonds that you’ve felt been dragging you down. Don’t even ask what it means. Logic and magic have nothing to do with each other. Let events wash over you now, and explain it all later on in any way that makes sense. Don’t go around sticking out your neck if blame is waiting to fall. The walls have ears and possibly no sympathy. Ordinarily you’re the first to help others, but you may not be able to do so now. You need to be treated with respect. Insist on receiving the whole story, rather than have something dumped on you without warning. Once feelings are realized, they are easier to accept. The emotional tap is open, so let it run freely. Get all the information before jumping into action. Listen to your intuitive feelings & realize that recent happenings were inevitable.

Fish for Sale

2008.12.14

Anyone interested in some saltwater fish? I’ll part with them cheap. You just have to come get them.

Need to get rid of:
Blue Faced Angelfish $75
Onyx Percula Clown $25
Zebra Striped Damsel $5
Blue Damsel Free!
2 large Engineer Gobies $25
Picasso Triggerfish $50
Blue Hepatus Tang $50

That should cover everything I think. If not, I’ll add them later. I’ll post some suggested prices later.

AT&T uVerse Rocks!

2008.11.27

Whether this should be considered good or bad, AT&T now owns 100% of my communications and does a halfway decent job of providing what I need - aside from cellular service. If they could get that figured out, they’d be one hell of a provider.

Last Monday was my scheduled installation window. I didn’t know what to expect - the phone lines in my apartment were never connected for anything. Most of the boxes looked hideous, the wiring hung out of the basement ceiling, and several lines looked like they had been cut. Thankfully those were all old connections. Apparently my apartment has cat-5 cabling for telephone lines. This was excellent news.

Nick and Aaron arrived at 9:00am, smack in the middle of the two hour arrival window. I half expected my installation to take the full 4 - 6 hours they had quoted in the welcome email. Luckily they were able to figure it all out in less than 3! While they were busy fiddling with the main connection and trying to find where the wires went in the wall, I was busy grilling them with questions about my soon to be new service. They were very knowledgeable about what they were doing and what their equipment was capable of.

Both video and data are piped into the house over the telephone line at nearly 25 megabits per second. The connection is actually capable of future speeds over 65 megabits. A “residential terminal” takes the VDSL signal from the telephone wire and provides wireless b/g data connectivity, HPNA (back-fed over RG6 coax), along with a few standard 10/100 ports for wired devices.

From what I can tell, the “cable box” is just another node on the network running Microsoft Windows CE, and Microsoft’s IPTV client software. It is assigned an internal IP address from the terminal just as the other network clients are and can be fed via ethernet or HPNA over the existing cable link. When I had it plugged into ethernet all of the ports on my switch flashed. From what I can tell, it looks like the video feed is multicasted to the network segment the “cable box” is on. When it is plugged into HPNA over coax, it appears all traffic is routed to that interface, avoiding the LAN.

Aaron explained that the network port on the back of my cable receiver was live. One could plug a computer into it, get an IP, and surf the web. Very interesting news. Mine is fed via the cable link, which leaves the network port free. The HPNA cable link is around 112 megabit to the residential terminal. This would be very handy if I wanted to put all of my equipment on the subnet behind their router - the problem is I just don’t trust a 2wire. More on this later.

I opted for their fastest tier of data services, Max18. I’m fairly impressed. I haven’t hit a solid 18 megabits yet, but I’ve come damn close. I downloaded a few ISO’s in just a few minutes each. That’s craziness. Here’s a result from a test I just ran.

Quoted speeds are 18 down, 1.5 up. Overall, this is a decent bit faster than my WOW! connection, for the same price… and if you know me, you know I love a deal. :-)

So far I am extremely happy. The video output on the television is amazing even in standard def. The one gripe I had was the lack of an included HDMI cable during installation. They only connected the TV using component cables. While they also provide a 1080i signal, they don’t look nearly as good as the HDMI connection. Weird, huh? It’s true.

Now if AT&T can get my iPhone working “in more places” like they promise, I’ll be one happy customer.

Netgear ReadyNAS Pro!

2008.11.14

I’ve been a fan of Netgear products since I first encountered them many years back. They’ve always felt top-notch and rugged compared to the flimsy plastic things their competitors were making. In fact, one of my first ethernet switches was a Netgear, clad in classic blue metal casing. That thing was a tank. I dragged it with me to college and back. It is still clinging to life, switching packets at my Grandmother’s house, tucked under a bed in their spare bedroom, hanging with the dust bunnies. I have a fancy gigabit switch these days - though, I’m considering getting one with more ports, possibly managed.

Anyway, enough nostalgia. The real purpose for this post is right here. A few weeks ago I was browsing around on several websites when I came across mention of Netgear’s ReadyNAS product line. Originally, I intended to build my own storage array, but after seeing this I had a change of heart (mostly because of the price!). The first ReadyNAS products in the line were produced by a company named Infrant, which Netgear has now acquired. The newest addition to the ReadyNAS line of products is the ReadyNAS Pro. All I can say about it is: Wow!

This thing most certainly does not disappoint. It is, quite simply, an amazing little box. Stuffed with a Core 2 Duo, a gigabyte of RAM, and dual redundant gigabit network links, it can move seriously large amounts of data - and fast. After reading nearly every review I could get my hands on, it was time to purchase.

I did some homework and shopped around to see who offered them and at what price. Netgear was offering a rebate to those buying the 1.5tb ReadyNAS PRO which entitled them to a free Nintendo Wii. After narrowing it down to a few of their approved e-tailers listed in the rebate terms, I decided to check one other, eaegis.com. They were not listed in the legal wording, but were available in a drop down list on the rebate site. I fired off an email, and within minutes had a response from Mohamed, which was also copied to their account manager, Kris, at Netgear. Mohamed and his teammates worked until my questions were all answered. Truth be told, eaegis is the most amazing company I have ever bought from online. They are very swift and incredibly thorough, a 10 out of 10!

The ordering process was very fast and simple, and I even had the chance to select the type of RAID setup I would like on my unit at order time. I placed my order around 7:40am on October 14th. At 7:41am I got my order confirmation email. At 7:50am, I got an email from Mohamed (does this guy ever go home?) stating that he was starting the burn-in test on my unit and would keep me updated. Eaegis is probably the only distributor that does a 48 hour burn in test on these units prior to shipping them to you. My unit passed all tests and was sent out two days later.

I made a cheesy unboxing video when the unit arrived, but I won’t be posting it for my reputation’s sake! Haha. The first day I had the unit I moved some files back and forth to test it and set up all of the shares that I was going to need. The second day I copied all of the content - more than 800 gigabytes worth. Transferring the data went much faster than I expected. It could have gone faster, but didn’t mostly because I wasn’t actively at the computer to click through Windows’ silly errors when it wasn’t sure what to do. I can get over 80 megabytes per second off the disks, easy. That’s absolutely insane. It’s faster to store data on the NAS than on local storage.

Since I’ve had the unit, I have had zero problems. It is stable as a rock - fast as lightning - and certainly much quieter than the server 2003 box that I was hosting my shares on before. I’ve got it set up to stream movies to our PS3’s (yes, we have two), to store virtual machine images (freeing up space on my MacBook Pro), and to host my iTunes library.  I have the 500 gig external drive that came with my order (another freebie from eaegis!) set up to be a backup for some of my critical data (mostly just music, some documents), with backup jobs running three times a week without any attention from me.

The support for the unit is top notch. I joined their support forums in case I ever needed, but mostly it has been just for fun. It’s a great community filled with bright, helpful people who will try their best to get you through whatever pickle you may be in. I couldn’t have asked for more from these guys. Great product, great performance, great support.

Ignorant Fools

2008.11.05

I’m amazed how ignorant some of my friends are. All it takes is a black man being elected President to bring it out of them.

I thought so highly of some of them - now I’m ashamed they’re on my facebook profile. Ugh.

Kind of sad. :-(

Spoiled: I am!

2008.10.15

I am so very spoiled. I buy gadgets left and right. It’s almost kind of sickening, really. I’ve come across yet another gadget that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on - a Netgear ReadyNAS Pro! Mmmm.

Me - soon to be owner of a shiny new toy, eventually loaded with 9 terabytes of storage. *drools*

More info to come once it arrives! I ordered it yesterday. Still in 48 hour burn-in test, then it has to ship from Florida. Yargh. That’s too long to wait!
